Two Viña Errázuriz Wines Took First and Second Places in the Recent Stockholm Version of the Berlin Tasting

In a new demonstration of the quality of Chilean wines, Viña Errázuriz’s two Icon wines, Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve and Seña, both from the 2005 vintage, took the first and second places respectively in the new version of the Berlin Tasting, held in Stockholm. Read More >

The wines were chosen in a blind tasting by an important group of Swedish consumers over the finest French and Italian wines, reaffirming the world-class nature of Chilean wines.

Commenting the results, Eduardo Chadwick affirmed that they had once again met the objective of showing “the high quality of our Icon wines, which are on a par with the best Cabernet Sauvignons in the world. This result is a testimony to our passion for producing the best wines and the recognition is well-deserved.”

  • I honestly think that a lot of professional sommeliers and journalists were a bit biased and thought of Chile as sound, clean, well-made value for money, but not perhaps as great, complex and age worthy wines. These exercises have clearly shown that Chile’s best wines truly belong in the Champions League of wine!

  • …What has struck me most after this experience is the ability of the Icon wines to develop with ageing. The older samples of Seña–the 1997 for example–are now truly great and even more confusingly ‘Bordeaux-ish’ in a way I had never thought possible. To me this is a point that needs to be stated over and over again.

  • I don’t think he was expecting at all to do as well as he did, but I think having done it, it was an educational experience further than he had planned, because instead of just educating the 40 or 50 people in the room, he educated the entire world.

  • When Eduardo and I first discussed the concept of this blind tasting format, I told him to brace himself for disappointment, especially given the popularity of Bordeaux reds in this part of the world. I was completely wrong in my warning and I am truly surprised by the results…

  • Until that point only Eduardo knew what he had in his hands. Today the whole world knows… By reaching indisputable recognition in the world wine scene, Eduardo Chadwick’s wines have clearly demonstrated Chile’s tremendous vitivinicultural potential and have helped Chilean wines earn greater space and credibility in the international market.

  • These tastings definitely have had an impact on how many influential members of the American wine trade view Chile today. So I see them as invaluable to promoting Chile’s well- deserved image as a source for world-class wine that can sit alongside the best that the rest of the world has to offer.

  • One enterprising Chilean wine producer, Eduardo Chadwick of Viña Errázuriz, has managed to organise a similar evolutionary milestone for the Chilean wine industry—or at least of his own wines… at what will doubtless come to be known in the history of Chilean wine as the “Berlin Tasting”
