Chilean Icons Showcased their World-Class Ageing Potential in the First Berlin Tasting of this New Era, Held in Asia

More than 60 attendees, including key Korean wine critics, sommeliers, and members of the wine trade, gathered at the Millenium Hilton Hotel Seoul on Friday 7th June of 2013 to participate in the first edition of Viña Errázuriz’s renewed blind tasting initiative to be held in Korea, a Berlin Tasting in a vertical format aimed at demonstrating these wines’ world-class ageing potential. This tasting was performed for the first time in a vertical format, pitching 20 years of evolution through historic vintages of Chilean Icon wines, such as Viñedo Chadwick, Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve, La Cumbre, Kai, and Seña, alongside classic vintages of Bordeaux Premiers Grands Crus Classés in order to showcase their world-class ageing potential.

In a new landmark moment for the Chilean wines, the blind vertical tasting results from Seoul pronounced Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve 2009 the favourite wine, and Seña 1997 in second place, ahead of Château Margaux 2003. The rest of the top 10 slots were all taken by Errázuriz wines, with the exception of the Château Latour 2006 and Château Lafite 1995, which tied for ninth place.

The tasting was led by Viña Errázuriz President, Eduardo Chadwick, along with Editor-in-Chief and Executive Director of Wine Review Magazine, Korea’s premiere wine publication, Mina Choi, as moderator, who commented after the experience: “I was very glad to find the audience, which included some of the most important people and opinion leaders in the Korean wine market, choosing the greatest wines themselves and realizing it was exactly the Chilean Icon Wines that they had chosen. The reaction from the audience was explosive! I’m sure this will be another milestone for Chile in Korea.”

Eduardo Chadwick added, “It’s a fantastic result for Chilean wines, and at Viña Errázuriz we are most proud of our team’s achievements because this shows once again that Chilean wines –our 2009 Don Maximiano on this occasion– are at the top of Korean connoisseur’s preferences, competing with the most famous wines in the world. Moreover, this time we tasted vintages from the last 20 years, what demonstrated the great consistency and ageing potential of Chilean wines.”

This Berlin Tasting – World’s Icons Judgment in Seoul followed a series of over 15 successful events performed at the key wine capitals around the world from 2004 through 2012, and it was special in that it launched Viña Errázuriz’s new educational initiative’s era to further build international recognition for the world-class quality and ageing potential of Chilean wines, in the coming years.

  • The first edition of vertical format in Korea inspired many people by proving the world-class ageing potential and showcasing the evolution through historic vintages of Chilean Icon wines. Whenever I reflect the Berlin Tasting, it reminds me of ‘magic.’ But, the fairest and clearest magic follows the blind vertical tasting format without any tricks.

  • I don’t think he was expecting at all to do as well as he did, but I think having done it, it was an educational experience further than he had planned, because instead of just educating the 40 or 50 people in the room, he educated the entire world.

  • When Eduardo and I first discussed the concept of this blind tasting format, I told him to brace himself for disappointment, especially given the popularity of Bordeaux reds in this part of the world. I was completely wrong in my warning and I am truly surprised by the results…

  • Until that point only Eduardo knew what he had in his hands. Today the whole world knows… By reaching indisputable recognition in the world wine scene, Eduardo Chadwick’s wines have clearly demonstrated Chile’s tremendous vitivinicultural potential and have helped Chilean wines earn greater space and credibility in the international market.

  • These tastings definitely have had an impact on how many influential members of the American wine trade view Chile today. So I see them as invaluable to promoting Chile’s well- deserved image as a source for world-class wine that can sit alongside the best that the rest of the world has to offer.

  • One enterprising Chilean wine producer, Eduardo Chadwick of Viña Errázuriz, has managed to organise a similar evolutionary milestone for the Chilean wine industry—or at least of his own wines… at what will doubtless come to be known in the history of Chilean wine as the “Berlin Tasting”
