The Berlin Tasting 10th Anniversary Celebrations Reached Europe

Several events revisited historical destinations of the 10-years journey, such as Denmark, the United Kingdom and Switzerland.

(May, 2014).-

Following the celebrations held in Asia last March, the world-tour launched to celebrate ten years of the blind tasting initiative that toured 17 countries and established Chile’s place amongst the world’s greatest wine appellations, reached Europe revisiting some of the historical destinations where the Berlin Tasting took place.

The series of celebrations hosted by Eduardo Chadwick, President of Viña Errázuriz and Viña Seña, started in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Wednesday 21st. There, a lunch with specialized Danish press and important members of the Sommeliers’ Association was carried out at the Nimb Restaurant, located at the famous Tivoli Gardens.

On Thursday 22nd, top journalists, brokers and key gate keepers of the UK wine trade attended a special dinner in London, at the Ledbury, chosen N°10 in this year’s 50 Best Restaurants of the World’s list. Top chef Brett Graham created a menu to match the wines chosen to illustrate a number of milestones over these past 35 years, and Consultant Editor of Decanter Magazine, Steven Spurrier, creator of the Judgment of Paris, told about how the Berlin Tasting rolled out across the world and his experience alongside this process.

Then, on Friday 23rd, in Zurich, Switzerland, a lunch with top clients took place at the 20/20 Restaurant, and another Gala Dinner was celebrated at the Zunfthaus zur Waag restaurant, once again pairing older vintages of the Chilean wines that participated in previous Berlin Tastings, with the highest quality gastronomy.

Last but not least, these celebrations in Europe are having a high-end closure with a commemorative Master Class within the context of the present Vinexpo Asia Pacific Hong Kong, one of the most important events on the industry calendar, where Eduardo Chadwick, Steven Spurrier and Jeannie Cho Lee, first Asian Master of Wine, will co-host a seminar honoring the Berlin Tasting and granting the attendees the unique opportunity to taste historic vintages of Chilean iconic wines.

The commemoration of the Berlin Tasting 10th Anniversary is far from being over…it will continue, moving to the American continent in the second-half of this year.

  • I don’t think he was expecting at all to do as well as he did, but I think having done it, it was an educational experience further than he had planned, because instead of just educating the 40 or 50 people in the room, he educated the entire world.

  • When Eduardo and I first discussed the concept of this blind tasting format, I told him to brace himself for disappointment, especially given the popularity of Bordeaux reds in this part of the world. I was completely wrong in my warning and I am truly surprised by the results…

  • Until that point only Eduardo knew what he had in his hands. Today the whole world knows… By reaching indisputable recognition in the world wine scene, Eduardo Chadwick’s wines have clearly demonstrated Chile’s tremendous vitivinicultural potential and have helped Chilean wines earn greater space and credibility in the international market.

  • These tastings definitely have had an impact on how many influential members of the American wine trade view Chile today. So I see them as invaluable to promoting Chile’s well- deserved image as a source for world-class wine that can sit alongside the best that the rest of the world has to offer.

  • One enterprising Chilean wine producer, Eduardo Chadwick of Viña Errázuriz, has managed to organise a similar evolutionary milestone for the Chilean wine industry—or at least of his own wines… at what will doubtless come to be known in the history of Chilean wine as the “Berlin Tasting”
